How do you read the Bhagavatam? All the Sanskrit and word for word? Or, just the translation and purport?
I usually discipline myself to read the lot. It sometimes gives me the impression that I am just dawdling along but I have the benefit of associating with every aspect of Prabhupada's presentation of the text. Lately after deciding to study the mood and purpose of certain personalities, specifically Vamanadeva and Varahadeva I decided to simplify, focusing on translation and purports only. That helps the flow and understanding of the pastimes and character of the personalities within.
My plan is to prepare an outline of the pastime, the highlights, the purpose and mood of the personalities and any personal realisations so I am prepared for the odd occasion when I might be called to speak on the topic. Often one is requested to speak on an appearance day without much warning and it is too late to do an in depth preparation.

Recently I was given an epub version of the Bhagavatam in which Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura's commentary is appended to Srila Prabhupada's purports. It is interesting to note that he analyses the words of the text in such a way that he occasionally produces up to three alternatives of the translation. I have always felt the importance of reading 'the lot' but given my purpose I suspect it is ok to move freely through the story and purports so as to absorb the storyline and philosophy more readily.

Thu, 09 Sep 2010 19:14:51 -0700 Creativity and thinking. More from Presentation Zen and John Cleese on getting away from it all. http://www.aniruddha.me/creativity-and-thinking-more-from-presentatio http://www.aniruddha.me/creativity-and-thinking-more-from-presentatio

Providing some elbow room for the mind to absorb and reflect also allows the intelligence to function properly. Even if we aren't focusing on the problems at hand!

John Cleese makes an interesting comment refering to the old saying, "Let me sleep on it!" I've experienced this many times myself, most recently while contemplating topics for our next Bhagavad-gita study sessions at Krsnafest. I'd been giving it some conscious thought but wasn't making much progress. At least that's how I felt. After waking on Tuesday morning the solution came to me instantly. Check out the embedded video of John Cleese speaking on this topic in the article from Presentation Zen. Humourous and thought provoking.

One of the main problems for many of use today is that we are always in a hurry and our minds are a bit scattered juggling many balls in the air. But if we are racing around all day with a busy mind, Cleese says, we are not going to have many creative ideas. We must slow down our minds to see the connections. There is some evidence that insights, for example, are best captured when we slow down, clear the noise and do not think about the problem at hand.Read more at www.presentationzen.com

Sometimes I'm doing so many things at once I forget what it is I'm doing. As soon as I sit down to chant Hare Krsna my mind can think of all the important things it forgot to do. For some reason it's averse to purification. It loves the business, the hussle and bussle of it all, infected with the mode of passion. Yet, I find if I can drag my mind away from the thrum of doing to a more introspective place it can analyse and process a vast range of issues with clarity and precision sometimes without even actually focusing on any particular issue at all.

Amplify’d from www.theage.com.au
The picture that emerges is troubling, at least to anyone who values the subtlety, rather than just the speed, of human thought. People who read text studded with links, the studies show, comprehend less than those who read words printed on pages. People who watch busy multimedia presentations remember less than those who take in information in a more sedate and focused manner. People who are continually distracted by emails, updates and other messages understand less than those who are able to concentrate. And people who juggle many tasks are often less creative and less productive than those who do one thing at a time.Read more at www.theage.com.au

Mark and the doughnuts

What do you think of when someone says the word, “Doughnut”? Fast food chains? Cops in a car pretending to “stake out a joint” while guiltily putting on the pounds? Perhaps Homer from the Simpsons saying, “Mmmm… sugary, fried, greasy treats…”

Whatever your thoughts are, the words “healthy” and “spiritual” probably aren’t amongst them.

Yet Doughnut Plant, one of the trendiest and most popular doughnut shops in New York City, has managed to make these words synonymous with its fare.

I'm glad to hear that this place is still going strong. I have fond memories of their fare from my last visit in 2007. Its one place I am looking forward to when we arrive later this week. The doughnuts are huge and delicious. Your stomach will hurt because you ate too many!

With some further research and help from His Holiness Bhanu Swami, we have concluded that there is really no basis in either 1) the scripture, specifically the Hari-bhakti-vilasa, the guidebook for devotional practices compiled by Sanatana Gosvami, or 2) Srila Prabhupada’s instructions, for the idea that if one performs a full nirjala fast on Pandava Nirjala Ekadasi, that will negate any ill effects from having broken Ekadasi over the previous year.

I was contemplating fasting all day on Tuesday. After reading this article by Dravida Prabhu I've decided to just steer myself towards my service and fasting from grains and beans, the usual. If I fast all day I won't get much service done and will spend at least half the next day recovering.

In their most concentrated organizing effort, Panchajanya Project representatives took a booth at the national Asian American Hotel Owners Association last year to promote their efforts. They received more than 12,000 confirmed orders.

Part of the acceptance of the Gita by the motel industry could be attributed to the fact that so many motel owners may already be familiar with the text -- an estimated 60 percent of the economy lodgings in the United States are owned by Indian Americans, primarily Gujarati Patels.

Cyclists who wear headphones while riding are increasing their risk of being involved in a serious crash, according to a transport safety expert.

As far as I am concerned listening to anything other than what is going on around you is essential when riding a bike. Not only that one has to be especially diligent when on or near tram tracks. You can come a cropper just left up to your own devices what to speak of what others are doing!

This week at Hare Krishna Valley we continued with our planting of the broccoli and cauliflower crop. This now brings the total to 5,500 seedlings in the ground. We will begin picking the vegetables in the beginning of August, and will continue right through until the end of September.

I popped into the farm today dropping off Virabhadra Prabhu after a meeting at the Surf Coast Shire with the local strategic planning coordinator. We are working on our future plans and permits with them. On my way out Manigriva gave me a quick tour of the new plantings of cauliflower and broccholi. Last week they had planted 5,500 seedlings and I think now they have close to 7,000. We are going to be inundated with the vegetables in August and September. Wonderful.

You can see some really great shots of the market garden at the farm blog. Follow the link.

Welcome to the Jagannatha Mandir where the priests have to point their guns at the police to ensure they do their job in protecting Lord Jagannatha from the non-Hindus!

Thu, 27 May 2010 17:22:00 -0700 Indians the new Italians in migration - Reprise http://www.aniruddha.me/indians-the-new-italians-in-migration-reprise http://www.aniruddha.me/indians-the-new-italians-in-migration-reprise
AUSTRALIA has more Indians than Italians. The Indian community in this country has doubled in just six years, becoming our fastest-growing minority, new figures show.

The Indian community are our natural customers. That is why we should look after them. Why shouldn't we? Obviously we shouldn't cultivate anyone just to make money. Rather we should make friends with anyone who visits the temple. So inspired they will reciprocate.

My point in highlighting this article is to show that it is natural for ISKCON to attract more Indian bodied devotees. They are our natural customers and there are more of them living in our country now.

They are easier to cultivate than non-Indians. Why? Because they have a natural aptitude and inclination to devotional service. So it is natural for us to find them participating. They already have a stock of ajnata-sukrti.

If they are seen only as a source of income then one is missing the point. They may give but so will anyone who participates in the process of bhakti.

We are sometimes criticised for having too many Indians in our community. That we are neglecting the non-Indian audience.

Those who criticise don't know or choose not to see the other side of the story. They don't see the thousands of persons taking prasada at our restaurants and catering events, the yogis at the yoga studio, the jnanis who attend our Gita Workshops at Krsnafest and the people who hear the hari-nama of the sankirtana party. They might take longer to come to Krsna via their ajnata-sukrti but come they will and they are, in the thousands.

Like wet grass that needs to dry out a bit before we can ignite the full flame of Krsna consciousness. We give them the same thing. Krsna kirtana, katha and prasada and the end result is the same. One might take a little longer than the other.

We are making devotees in both audiences, if we can make such a distinction. My realisation of late is there are so many people interested in Krsna. We just have to look after their needs and they will come.

Bhakta Prabhu went to visit some of our neighbours this week. We want to know what their interests, needs and concerns are. One of the things they want is an opportunity to visit the temple to see what we are up to. They feel intimidated because they aren't Indian or Hindu. We will create an event for them specifically; arrange for some kirtana and a discussion, cook a feast and feed them. Same process. Slightly different application.

In conclusion what should we be doing? Look after everyone. Don't be surprised if everyone is interested in Krsna. Don't be surprised at the fact that the Indian community is attracted and don't be fooled into thinking they won't change their ways. They are. We have over 250 devotees chanting sixteen rounds in our community. Ninety percent plus are of Indian origin. They are regular ISKCON devotees. We also have our non-Indian participants as well.

They go well together.

Sun, 04 Apr 2010 00:55:42 -0700 the Krishna Brand http://www.aniruddha.me/the-krishna-brand http://www.aniruddha.me/the-krishna-brand

After a chat about blogging with some friends on Thursday night I decided to put my money where my mouth is, or should I say where my keyboard is?

I remember reading a note by Dave Winer about blogging every Friday, rain or shine. It’s time to get started. I started on Thursday but that’s ok. I’m eventually posting it today, Sunday.

An incident I became aware of this week has got me thinking, "What is the Hare Krishna brand? What makes its value? Why do our customers want to protect it?

I realise this is marketing jargon but we are in the business of marketing aren’t we? We just call it by another name; preaching, outreach etc.

The incident was kind of scary. From a PR point of view anything that can put an organisation into disrepute if observed by enough concerned and connected persons can be all over the internet tomorrow. Scary stuff.

The Hari-nama party went out on Thursday night to St Kilda. They were short of manpower and encouraged a new person to come along. They were heckled by one of the local deros  who also happens to be a Food for Life regular. Although encouraged to ignore the heckling the new man took it upon himself to teach the heckler a lesson and invited him down a side alley for a discussion which turned into a confrontation.

This was observed by a number of people; tourists armed with digital recording devices, local business people and their patrons and a well wisher of the Hare Krishna Movement.

He called me the next day to tell me his concern. I was glad he called.

But, it got me thinking?

He respects the devotees and doesn’t want to see that respect diminished.

I put the question to my online friends and got some great responses. Here’s a comment from an old friend that supports this notion.

Here’s what Steve had to say, “As an outsider... Whenever I mention you in conversation, people always say, 'nice people, who do no harm.' It's the 'no harm' that seems powerful to me. So many religions are seen as creating harm, as dangerous, frightening.”

I guess that explains why our friend didn’t like to see a devotee in a confrontation?

Although this is an important element I still think there is more to our brand. I’m going to work on finding it out.

Any suggestions?
